Terry Da Libra Biography
Birth and Teenage Years (1980-1999)
This is the short biography of Greek electronic music producer Lefteris Pimenidis aka Terry Da Libra. Born in Herten – Germany, he his parents along with his brother, returned to Greece in September 1980 after their first 2 years of marriage. At that time, Terry showed an excellent accent of German language & his love for music by singing his very first pop song & showcasing his dance moves, which were based on German pop artists Trio - Da Da Da and everyone was amazed at Terry's interaction at such a young age.
Slowly during his first teenage years, his family noticed that he started to show interest towards piano and synthetic sounds. From the very first moment when his uncle bought him a Casio synthesizer for his birthday, Terry began to gain influence from artists such as Vangelis, Jean Michel Jarre, Yanni, Stamatis Spanoudakis, Basil Poledouris and many others.
Later on, Terry, as much as he was spending time by listening to music on Radio, TV, he also started capturing random taps of piano chords and synths by different artists and music producers. As a result he would try to re-create the whole base of a song in to his own version. Fortunately for his listening experience, there was a vinyl store at the last level of the building where Terry was living and he always held the money his mother gave him in order to buy records mostly from the 90’s & single hits from: The Prodigy, U96, Jam & Spoon, Dr. Ramirez, Age Of Love, Quench, KLF, Everything But The Girl and Enigma. His influences grew further when he started to listen to electronic music, rock bands, classical music, jazz and movie soundtracks. This would lead to Terry showcasing his knowledge of melodies to people, who promptly asked him if he had professional music training. As a result the time for Terry to begin his lessons in a music school had begun, however this ended within two months as his piano tutor had to leave owing to personal reasons. He was advised though that he should read the Autorgan lesson book & buy a new workstation synthesizer.
As his feelings grew more & more each time with music, he became a rock band member based on progressive rock by listening to a lot of Dream Theater & Melodic Metal whilst not forgetting his love for electronic music. In the early 90’s , Terry made his first contact with the Roland Groove Box 303 which a friend had in his possession. He instantly showed a big interest & together they explored the world of electronic sounds that the synth provided with its technology. Both made European psychedelic trance tracks & they organized parties with LIVE ACT. These were very successful and later they succeeded in releasing their first three tracks on a Greek magazine related to European psychedelic trance music & EDM.
However, Terry had to take a break from music as in May 1999 he joined the Army for 18 whole months & taking him away from his family, beloved ones & his music creativity.
The Night Life (2000 - 2003)
Once Terry was dismissed from the Greek forces at the end of the year 2000, he immediately began to resume his normal life. Terry was approached at the end 2001 & asked if he would like to be a part of a musical project once more. The project was Terry's chance to collaborate with the resident DJ of his local club, adding his own effects and synth sounds from a Roland 505 and a Boss sampling workstation for 30 minutes to give a more "live-sounding" variation to the tracks while the DJ played the tracks. Terry worked alongside the percussionist to deliver a unique character, receiving good feedback as a result.
These nights changed Terry’s way of life and made him think with a large amount of excitement regarding the idea of becoming a DJ. He learnt the basics, techniques & started to play his music in the local bars at the age of 21. He focused on getting the best underground electronic music from Global Underground, Ministry of Sound and Renaissance amongst others.
He managed to spin his first music in a bar in 2001 & listeners gave Terry good praise in his musical tastes. Many remarked as to how underground his style was, showing a uniquely non-commercial style of DJ'ing not present at the time. Additionally, Terry’s interests turned to soulful house, realising that this was a great genre to explore.
Terry started to build his name, and in time he was mixing genres together & using the underground sound for a more peak time hour. It was in this way that he accomplished the starting of a following, with many people appreciating his musical style and selection.
Word quickly spread of Terry’s mixing capabilities & music, and by working three jobs in the summer of 2003 he was able to afford a Roland Groove Box 909.
The Night Club. (2003 - 2007)
As a result of Terry's success he was called to meet the owners of a nightclub in the summer of 2003, eventually winning the crowd and getting accepted to DJ several nights a week.
By the end of the summer, he been asked if he would like to become the resident DJ at the start of the summer 2004. Terry promptly seized the opportunity with both hands. He gained valuable experience of the industry by doing so, and this helped him to mould his overall style. He continued with this for four years with this collaboration and learned a great deal. At the start of 2007 he resigned, but Terry continued to work in night bars, until his official work of the modern day.
Becoming a producer , labels, professional recognition & international support (2009 -2013)
2009 arrived and Terry decided to buy a PC for the specifications of handling modern music technology, getting experience with the capabilities of a DAW and learning how virtual synthesizers work. Due to his previous involvement with Roland Grooveboxes, VST's were easy for him to handle. FL Studio was the first DAW that Terry used to make his music for before making a switch to Ableton Live several months later.
Having read about techniques on the internet, Terry spent many hours learning his craft on the software before publishing his music on social media sites such as MySpace and Facebook. He began to receive very positive feedback, with people remarking that he would breakthrough as an electronic music producer. Terry's patience was rewarded with many music deals on record labels such as Enhanced Music, Silk Music and Black Hole Recordings. His tracks have been featured on compilations such as In Search of Sunrise 10 and the Silk Royal Showcase collections. Terry has also received support from Armin van Buuren on A State of Trance and Above & Beyond on Trance Around The World, where his remix of "Positiva - Jamrock" was the Web Vote Winner. His music has also been supported by Paul van Dyk, Markus Schulz, Myon & Shane 54, Max Graham, Bobina, tyDi, M.I.K.E., Tritonal, Roger Shah, Will Holland, Richard Durand, Ronski Speed, Maor Levi, Jaytech, Ben Nicky, Andy Duguid, Alex O'Rion , 7 Skies, Answer42, Dinka, Ruben De Ronde & many more!
The Future
Leuteris Pimenidis, more commonly known as Terry da Libra is without a doubt, one of Greece’s hidden treasures. Melody and harmony are both words that spring to mind from Terry's music. He continues to make emotive and melodic progressive Trance, gaining further support all the time.
